Your vehicle needs to be connected to the internet to receive OTA updates. You'll receive a notification when new updates are ready to download and install. These updates are regularly released; detailed release notes for each are on the support site.

Two Phases to OTA Updates

Downloading OTA Updates

When your vehicle is connected to the Internet, the software downloads seamlessly in the background. Enabling automatic software downloads in the center display ensures you never miss an update.

Just head to Settings > System > Software update and enable Automatic software download.

If you prefer not to enable automatic downloads, you'll receive a notification every time you enter your vehicle, allowing you to decide whether to download the software.

Installing OTA Updates

Once the software has been downloaded, a notification and clear instructions on the next steps will appear on the vehicle's center display.

You can kick-start the installation process immediately or at a more convenient time. If you decide to delay the installation, locating the notification is a breeze:

  • Simply swipe down from the top of the display to access your notifications.
  • Next, tap "Install now" on the center display and step out of the vehicle to lock the doors.
  • You will receive a confirmation notification on the center display and the Volvo Cars app once the installation is complete.
It's not recommended to access your vehicle during the installation. To ensure a smooth update experience, consider scheduling the installation overnight, as it may take up to 90 minutes to finish.

Additional Information

To ensure you have everything in place for a seamless OTA installation, consider the following:

  • The battery level for fully electric vehicles should be at least 40% before you begin the installation.
  • For plug-in hybrids, note that software installation is not possible during charging. However, it can occur if the vehicle is fully charged and the charging cable is still connected.
  • Also, it's important to make sure that the vehicle is locked.

While the installation is in progress, it's important to refrain from driving the vehicle.

If you attempt to access the vehicle during installation, you can potentially interrupt or terminate the process. This could lead to operational issues with the vehicle.

If you need access to the vehicle, you will need to utilize the key blade, as the remote function of the key fob will be disabled during installation. For more information on using the key blade to open the vehicle, please refer to the user manual.

If the installation is unsuccessful, we urge you to contact your Volvo retailer immediately.
